The case for artificial turf

A trend that is emerging in landscaping and gardening lately is artificial turf. We are seeing more and more of it online and getting enquiries about it from clients. One project we worked on recently was for a family who wanted a garden that was seriously low maintenance. Initially they thought they would like as much concrete as possible, but then made the decision to go with artificial grass in conjunction with other hard surfaces.

Compared to the fake grass from years ago, the artificial turf you can get these days is soft and realistic looking. It's environmentally friendly in that it doesn't need watering, and it's super low maintenance - no fertilising or mowing to worry about - you can have a perfect looking lawn year round. On the south side of your home often grass will struggle to grow because of lack of sunlight - artificial turf is great for situations like this. Plus you don't have to worry about feet and paws tracking mud into the house in bad weather.
But, as with anything, there are downsides too... at the end of the day it's a plastic product that won't last forever, and you're faced with something that will be difficult to recycle. It is more expensive to lay than a traditional lawn. Also most artificial turf will heat up in hot sun (although some manufacturers are dealing with this problem), and some people have complained about "turf-burn"!
Our clients love their artificial lawn, and many people who install it say they wouldn't go back to live grass. So whether you love it or hate it, expect to see more of it around!
