Pseudopanax crassifolius is one of a few species in New Zealand where the juvenile form of the tree is very different looking to the adult form. You can plant them pretty much anywhere, although they prefer full sun, and their sculptural shape will complement any other native plantings. You can't prune them, so make sure you plant them where you can watch them grow in all their glory. Aside from rabbits, who love the young plants, they don't have any pest or disease issues.
