Polystichum vestitum is one of the few natives that actually prefers a moist, shady site. It won't do as well in full sun, but will survive. Its fronds are almost prickly to touch - hence the name, and can grow up to 1.5 metres long. It will eventually form a kind of trunk, and start looking almost like a tree fern. In your garden it will complement grasses, and looks especially good with libertias.

It will tolerate cold conditions and frosts.
