Backyard Transformation

Case Study

Overview

Maxine and Richard bought their 1960s Hamilton house because they saw its potential to mould into their dream home.

The large rear garden, destined to be their main outdoor area, would be tackled once the house was complete.

What they hadn’t accounted for was the old fibreglass pool.

It was cracked and leaking, and further investigation revealed drainage problems throughout the area, rendering it unusable.

The verdict: the backyard shot to the top of their renovation list.

Their vision
Groundcover to the rescue

“Our house is going to be modern so we figured the outdoor space should be clean, modern, easy to maintain and we wanted it to flow from the house.”

“We had very simple but specific requirements – a pad for our hot tub, a good deck, an area for growing vegetables, and the design had to be clean and modern.”

“We searched the internet for someone to do the job, and we were drawn to the work Groundcover had done. But what sealed it was Graeme’s approach. He came to the site, sussed out the problems, listened carefully to what we wanted, gave us a whole load of ideas – from that discussion a plan was drawn up.”

“Graeme made it a simple process from there.”

Groundcover’s workmanship

“Groundcover is a thorough and very professional and cohesive team who made our main outdoor area very functional. We’re not experts in this sort of thing but we had complete faith in them.

“The quality of their work is exceptional. We’ve had another builder on site who was very impressed with the Groundcover team’s workmanship, particularly the degree of detail.

“They were easy to work with in terms of requirements but more than anything it was their attention to detail and their clever solutions. An example of this was how they transformed existing awkward verandah columns by closing in an area at the side of the deck for a barbecue nook. And our new deck’s steps, which lead to the sunken fire pit, double as extra seating when we have a crowd in. Graeme suggested the pit and knew where to source the corten-steel fire itself.

“Graeme has excellent contacts. He recommended an electrician who created perfect spotlighting, mood lighting and sensors.”

“There was no conflict on anything. Groundcover is a team of guys who listened and were always on to things.

Outcome

“Our backyard is now amazing and much more practical. It’s the perfect spot for entertaining.

“The drainage problems were sorted by knocking down a retaining wall and directing to the gully below. Raised vegetable beds are tucked away in what used to be a bog.

“Different levels of elevation create flow throughout. The big deck sweeps out from the house, then steps down to Indian limestone paving that stretches the width of the section. Our fire pit is in the centre and our hot tub is nearby.

“Groundcover carried out all the planting too, suggesting specimens to complement the hard landscaping and help create a sense of areas.

“We couldn’t be happier!”
