How to build a deck that doesn't wobble | Deck building tips Waikato
A solid deck starts with solid ground
In the Waikato, decks are more than just an outdoor feature, they're the Kiwi way of life. they’re where we gather with friends and family, sip morning coffee, enjoy summer barbecues, or simply step outside to unwind. A deck can completely transform a backyard, making even a small space feel like an extension of your home. But not all decks are created equal.
Building a deck may look straightforward on the surface: posts, joists, and decking boards seem simple enough. The reality is that the difference between a deck that feels solid underfoot and one that wobbles or creaks comes down to the structure you don’t see - the groundwork, the framing, the fixings, and the attention to detail. A deck that’s built right from the bottom up not only lasts longer, but it also gives you the confidence and comfort to use it without hesitation - season after season.

The secret is in the structure
A deck is only as good as its foundation. The placement and depth of the piles, the spacing of the joists, and how the frame ties together all determine how well it stands the test of time.
In the Waikato, decks need to cope with shifting ground, seasonal rain, and long, hot summers. If the structure isn’t square, level, and properly braced, you’ll feel it - literally. What’s hidden beneath matters just as much as what you see on top.
Using the right materials is equally important: Suitably treated timber and fixings that can handle New Zealand’s weather are vital. Small shortcuts here can cause big problems later.

The difference is in the detail
A deck is more than just boards and posts - it’s the small details that make it feel truly finished and built to last. At Groundcover Landscaping, we take care of every detail, from perfectly set posts to precise mitered corners, seamless transitions around pergolas and verandah poles, and clean, level joins.
These finishing touches aren’t just about aesthetics. Proper attention to detail ensures that the deck is structurally sound, water drains correctly, and the boards sit flat and even - no creaks, gaps, or wobbles over time. It’s the careful planning, measuring, and craftsmanship in these technical areas that set a well-built deck apart from an average one.
When you see photos of our completed projects, the precision in corners, joins, and around obstacles speaks for itself - every line, every cut, every connection considered, tested, and perfected. That’s what makes a Groundcover deck feel as solid as it looks.

Signs your deck isn't built well
If you’re wondering whether your deck is as sound as it should be, here are some clear warning signs
- It wobbles or flexes when you walk across it. Usually, a sign of poor bracing or joist spacing
- You can see gaps opening between boards or posts. Indicates movement in the frame or substructure
- Posts are leaning or loose. The piles might not be deep enough or properly concreted in
- Creaking, soft, or spongy areas. Could point to moisture damage or failing fixings.
- Rusting nails or screws. Outdoor decks need galvanised or stainless fixings (we recommend screws not nails) if not, corrosion weakens the structure fast
If any of these sound familiar, it’s best to have a professional take a look before things get worse.
Common DIY deck mistakes
Deck building is a favourite Kiwi project, but it’s also one of the easiest to get wrong. Here are a few mistakes we see time and time again:
- Piles not deep enough, or uneven heights - they move as the ground settles, resulting in a deck that is not level
- Poor drainage planning - leading to rot and swelling.
- Incorrect board spacing - boards can warp or cup in summer.
- Untreated or low-grade timber - shortens the life of the deck dramatically.
- Skipping consent - decks over a certain height usually require council approval.
A deck should be something you can enjoy for decades, not a source of ongoing repairs.
Built to fit your space
Every site is unique, and so is every deck. A sloped section might call for a multi-level design, while a compact area could benefit from built-in seating or planters to make the most of every corner. Careful planning ensures the deck ties seamlessly into your home and garden.
